You know plums and prunes are delicious. But did you know these compact fruits are being heralded by scientists as the new “super food”? Plums match or exceed blueberries in disease-fighting antioxidants and phytonutrients. They are chock full of the same powerful phenolic compounds found in berries, red wine, and tea which inhibit the oxidation of bad cholesterol, and can reduce the risk of heart disease. They are rich in vitamin C and high in potassium, which helps manage high blood pressure and reduce stroke risk. They’re also a great source of insoluble fiber, which may help prevent colon cancer. Studies have even suggested they might be helpful in preventing breast cancer by altering the way the body metabolizes estrogen. And at only 30 calories, a plum is a delicious way to eat your way to good health.
